Phenol oxidases and morphogenesis in Podospora anserina.

چکیده
HE question of the relation between melanin synthesis and morphogenesis Thas been raised previously. HIRSCH 1954 and WESTERGAARD and HIR~CH 1954 concluded from their experiments with a wild-type strain of Neurospora crassa that the melanin pigments or the enzyme tyrosinase, a phenol oxidase which is responsible for the first steps in melanin synthesis, play a role in the formation of the protoperithecia. Further investigation of this question demonstrated that female sterile mutants of N . crassa have lost to a considerable degree the ability to form tyrosinase (BARBESGAARD and WAGNER 1959). The fact that the mutants do not form protoperithecia even when tyrosinase formation is triggered by induction (HOROWITZ et al. 1960), however, does not suggest a direct correlation between tyrosinase activity or melanin synthesis and morphogenesis.

Functions and regulation of the Nox family in the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina: a new role in cellulose degradation.
NADPH oxidases are enzymes that produce reactive oxygen species. Studies in mammals, plants and fungi have shown that they play important roles in differentiation, defence, host/pathogen interaction and mutualistic symbiosis. In this paper, we have identified a Podospora anserina mutant strain impaired for processes controlled by PaNox1 and PaNox2, the two Nox isoforms characterized in this mod...
متن کاملEvolution of Multicopper Oxidase Genes in Coprophilous and Non-Coprophilous Members of the Order Sordariales
Multicopper oxidases (MCO) catalyze the biological oxidation of various aromatic substrates and have been identified in plants, insects, bacteria, and wood rotting fungi. In nature, they are involved in biodegradation of biopolymers such as lignin and humic compounds, but have also been tested for various industrial applications. In fungi, MCOs have been shown to play important roles during the...
متن کاملMitochondrial quality control in aging and lifespan control of the fungal aging model Podospora anserina.
Aging of biological systems is a fundamental process controlled by a complex network of molecular pathways. In the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina, a model in which organismal aging can conveniently be analysed, mitochondria play a central role. A wide range of relevant pathways were identified that contribute to the maintenance of a population of functional mitochondria. These pathways a...
متن کاملA single amino acid difference is sufficient to elicit vegetative incompatibility in the fungus Podospora anserina.
Vegetative incompatibility is known to limit heterokaryosis in filamentous fungi. It results from genetic differences between incompatible strains at specific loci. The proteins encoded by the two incompatible alleles het-s and het-S of the fungus Podospora anserina differ from each other by 14 amino acids. Two approaches have been used to identify how many and which of these differences are ne...
متن کاملA nonmammalian homolog of the PAF7 gene(Zellweger syndrome) discovered as a gene involved in caryogamy in the fungus Podospora anserina
The car1 gene of the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina was cloned by complementation of a mutant defective for caryogamy (nuclear fusion), a process required for sexual sporulation. This gene encodes a protein that shows similarity to the mammalian PAF1 protein (Zellweger syndrome). Besides sequence similarity, the two proteins share a transmembrane domain and the same type of zinc finger m...
